Railway transportation was the first form of fast-moving transport that was widely used by long distance passengers’ traffic until the development of motor vehicles and aeroplane.

The engineers have constantly been in a challenge trying to increase the speed as much as possible while decreasing the travel time. By the time the 1800 c was coming to end, many trains had at least a speed of 100 km/ h which is almost like today’s speed of normal trains. The railways transport has gradually revolutionized over the years from steam power trains to diesel trains to highspeed rails. The high-speed rail is significantly faster that the traditional trains above the speed of 250 km/h. The highspeed rails were first invented in Japan and were commonly referred to as the bullet train. Today, high speed rails have been developed and used in different cities all over the different parts of the world. The high-speed rail is the fastest and most efficient method of land transportation. However, Asia and Europe are the only continents that have managed to create the high-speed railway cross international borders. However, the highspeed rail is more costly than the traditional rail.

Maglev trains are a good example of the revolution of the highspeed trains. This system uses the magnetic levitation technology. This kind of magnetic train system of transportation uses two sets of magnets.  One set is to repel pushing the train up of the track, and another is set of magnets is intended to move the elevated train ahead, taking advantage of the lack of friction. There are both high speed rail and low speed rail intensity.  With this kind of technology, the train travels along a guide way of magnets which control the train’s stability and speed. Magnetic trains accelerate and decelerate faster than the diesel trains.

Currently we only have about six commercial magnetic trains in the world. Japan has one, China has three while south Korea has constructed two magnetic train

The UK government is planning to construct new trains. The IK ultra-speed is one of the newest proposed high-speed magnetic-levitation train line that connects London and Glasgow, linking 16 stations and six airports.

High speed rail operates on standard gauge tracks of continuously welded rail on grade-separated right of way that incorporates a large turning radius in its design.  While high speed rail area designed from customer travel, some high-speed rails also offer freight services.

The magnetic trains have demonstrated minimal vehicle maintenance.

New train models that are magnetic such as the Japan’s L-series has set the record of the fastest train in the world with a record of 602 kilometers per hour. This Japanese train is currently being developed and tested by the central Japan Railway company. The Japanese L-series train is currently under development for regular commercial use. This technology that uses the Maglev system is the leading in the world as far as railways transport in the world is concerned. The first segment is set to open in the year 2027 in Tokyo before being expanded to Osaka. The technology is being copied around the world amongst different countries including the United States of America.  Discussions are being made to construct the same train model between Washington D.C and Baltimore.

With the continuous series of advancements in the world of railways transport, the United Kingdom government announced phasing out of the diesel train by the year 2040.
